Zebra mussel infestation in Lake Minnetonka is inevitable if crucial
steps are not taken. In response to this threat, the Lake Minnetonka
Association and the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District met with
the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
last summer and asked for consideration to remove some of the obstacles
hindering the implementation of a comprehensive prevention program
on Lake Minnetonka.
The Lake Minnetonka Association and the Lake Minnetonka Conservation
District have drafted an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Prevention Plan and AIS Risk Analysis. The plan will be an official proposal relating to
the threat of zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species and the specific steps that need to be taken in a
timely manner to prevent these species from invading our lake community.
Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are a continuing threat for Lake Minnetonka and its surrounding tributary lakes. The Lake Minnetonka Association believes that the level of protection is not currently adequate. The Lake Minnetonka Association recommends the overall risk of AIS introductions be reduced by at least 90%.
The Lake Minnetonka Association continues to advocate
for the protection of Lake Minnetonka against zebra mussels and
other exotic plants, animals and viruses.
