The Lake Minnetonka Association was an enthusiastic
supporter of the 2006 Milfoil Demonstration Project. The effectiveness
of herbicides to control milfoil in Lake Minnetonka was demonstrated
and studied in three different sites: Phelp’s Bay, Carmen’s
Bay and Gray’s Bay.
The results of the project were a success. Two of the three treatments tested
were effective in maintaining low milfoil density in the treated areas. Carmen’s
Bay did not see a significantly reduced amount of milfoil, which was due to the
use of a granular formulation that was applied unevenly at a low dose.
Overall, milfoil in Lake Minnetonka was less abundant and less dense
in 2006. There is a strong level of public support for expanding
milfoil control to entire bays on Lake Minnetonka during 2007.

Minnetonka Aquatic Herbicide Demonstration Project Draft Report,
as drafted by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center and the Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources.
